Following are some facts should keep in mind if you are planning come to travel in Thailand.

Temperature - In Bangkok, the temperature sometimes gets up to 40 degrees with high humidity especially during Jan-May (summer time). If you’re sightseeing, remember bring plenty of bottled water (never never drink tap water in Thailand) to avoid dehydrating. Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must have at all times.

Because the hit, you may like to drink cold drinks with ice inside, just be careful, those ice are often comes from unhygienic sources and if you can and don’t want to get sick, the best way to do is to avoid it.

Rains and floods - When you see it rains in Bangkok, don’t bother putting on a heavy raincoat because the rain will over fast after 10-20 minutes, just wear like Thais - slip on something light and cool, wear a pair of plastic shoes and take your umbrella, that’s it.

Mosquitoes - When you’re eating out in the evenings, especially eat outside the restaurant or around the beaches, watch out for those little creature. They are big and aggressive. Once you get bite by them, you will find difficult to get your skin back to normal. So ask the waiters to put a mosquito coil under the table to discourage them. Or wearing pale colored slacks and mosquito repellant will also keep them away.

Tipping - By Thai tradition, tipping is not commonly practiced in Thailand, because the result of foreign influence, it becomes more widespread nowadays. Normally, customers will give tip in the place such as in those more expensive restaurants, hairdressers and for hotel porters. But remember don’t add a tip in hotel restaurants (where a service charge is added to the bill already) or in the street restaurants.

Thai massage - It can be exhausitng, physically and mentally after sightseeing in the heat all day. Rejuvenate yourself with a traditional Thai massage is must needed. It is very easy to find one in Bangkok, just look at around many shops or at your hotel. In general, a two-hour massage costs about less than 20 dollars, upcountry it costs even less.

Street offering - If someone approaches you on the street and offer to sell you something like gems or jewelry, just smile and walk away. Don’t feel bad or angry, if you smile to the people who offer the stuff to you, they will not bother you anymore. So you can go in a shop and buy them instead. In there you may find better quality product and probably get a better price too.

Hey “You” - When you heard someone on the street shouts “hey you” to attract your attention, don’t get angry because they don’t realize they do that is impolite. “You” in Thai word mean “Khun”, which is a normal and polite form of address in Thai.

Mr. Jack or Miss Julie - Don’t be surprised if someone addresses you by your first name because The Thais normally address one another using first names only, in front, usually with the title ‘Khun’. Surnames are not commonly used as a mode of address.

Three names - Sooner or later after stay in Thailand for while, you will notice Thais have three names—a first name, a surname and a nickname. The nickname, usually something short and catchy, like Nok or Aey, it is given at birth and is used universally among family members and close friends.
