Welcome to the on-line home of traveler and photographer Michael Morrissey. After a successful business career, Mike now spends most of his time traveling the world, capturing the moment in his lens.
Born in the United States, and educated at Berkeley, Mike was influenced at an early age by his uncle, a colorful character who traveled widely and took many photographs. Mike was initially drawn to Paris, where he spent a lot of time in the early 1970’s, but it was on a trip to Katmandu, where he found himself driving a bus, that he got hooked on photography. A long period of travel and work in the east followed.
As a landscape architect/planner, Mike lived and worked in Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Japan, where he co-founded Refugees International. In Thailand he worked with the UNHCR developing refugee camps. He returned to the States for a few years in the 1980’s, but soon ended up back in Thailand, where he has lived ever since. Some years ago, Mike was able redesign his life around his twin passions, travel and photography.
His enthusiasm for photography grew out of an intense interest in exploring different cultures, an artistic bent, and a wish to record the dramatic and colorful images he sees on his travels. His desire to travel rises out of his awareness of a rapidly changing world. He has had some near misses, but claims that he never pushes his luck. He is most interested in communicating with people, and in portraying people of different cultures within their environment. He loves to take portraits of people when they least expect it. His photographs are an expression of the way he lives his life. The appeal of the camera is in its immediacy.
He appreciates hearing from people who have viewed his work. Please send your comments to Mike or subscribe to his RSS and get his latest updates.
