• Apar theid Museum, Johannesburg: Moving testament to a country torn asunder by poverty, racism, and classism. Particularly moving commentary regarding the late Steve Biko. An elegant, thoughtful and masterful collection of complexity and wonder. http://www.apartheidmuseum.org/HTML_APM/index.html
• Wandie’s Restaurant: located in Soweto but you’ll have to ask around to find it, there’s no sign! Fabulous south African comfort food visited by stars and commoners alike.

• The Lion Park: play with cubs, feed giraffes, and witness over 100 lions including the rare white lions (bred in captivity) just recently released back into the wild after facing extinction.
• Museum Africa, Johannesburg: located in the up and coming arts section, interesting collection of all things South African and a wonderful exhibit on Ghandi’s time spent in his law practice in Johannesburg and formulating his nonviolent philosophy. • Pretoria: the administrative capital of South Africa and the location of more embassies than any place other than Washington DC! (Currently hosting world FIFA games). Plan a visit when the jacarandas are in bloom.
• Soweto: the shanty and settlement homes, the sites of former horrid Apartheid murders and violence, now peaceful and flourishing.

• Sandton: a luxurious city and suburbs created in the last twenty years when everyone including the large businesses left town in Johannesburg. Stunning shopping mall, world class hotels, largest library in Africa.

• Mugg and Bean: fabulous chain café with the most wondrous apple banana crumb pie. Be sure to order the large size and go for the scoop of vanilla ice cream.
